WEEKEND RESULTS
Through Sunday, June 9
Birmingham Legion
Indy Eleven came to town riding a ten game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Legion has had a run of good form on the defensive end of the field lately, and was looking for the upset. This was a very physical game, and Indy managed to get several shots on goal. A tremendous performance by Matt van Oekel kept Indy at bay through much of the game, in very hot and humid conditions. Indy was granted a penalty kick on a hand ball in the box, which they converted. They went into halftime leading 1-0. Coming out in the second half, Indy made a hard push forward to try to break Legion down quickly. They had their chances, but couldn't get another one in the net. As Legion pushed back, they had some excellent looks at goal, but just couldn't quite get on the board. Legion loses 0-1.
Huntsville City FC
Huntsville was looking to build some momentum after their first win of the season last week. Their opponent was Crown Legacy, a mid table team that's been inconsistent. HV got the scoring started early, and the match was back-and-forth. The boys in blue kept things rolling to get their second win 4-2.
USL2
Legion 2
Saturday June 8 at Southern Soccer Academy
The Hammers faced SSA a week ago, and were beaten soundly 0-5, at home. Saturday they traveled to SSA, where they came up short 0-2.
Sunday June 9 vs Athens United
The Hammers played their second game of the weekend at home, immediately after the Legion/Indy match. Both teams had chances early, but didn't find the back of the net. Final score was 0-0.

Dothan United Dragons
Dothan’s home match was a big match-up between two of the top teams in the division. Asheville climbed into the top 10 of the national power rankings heading into the game. The game was hard-fought and physical throughout. There were several yellow cards, including one against the Asheville coach. Finally, an Asheville player picked up a second yellow in stoppage time. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, in front of good crowd that appeared to be over 4000. Note: USL2 commissioner Joel Nash was in town for the match; he's originally from Dothan.
GCPL
Alabama FC South
There was a lot riding on this game against the Sowegans, who were just one point behind the Storm in the table. ALFCS got on the scoreboard first with an early goal, and Sowegans tied it up before halftime. A late goal by the Turtles sealed the deal, and ALFCS loses 1-2. This result puts Sowegans into first place in the East, after winning four games in a row.
AFC Mobile
AFC played their best game mid-week against Union 10. They put forth an uneven performance against Pensacola Bay United, but still better on defense than recent games. They lose 1-5.
Union 10
Union 10 has played solid defense all season, and would need a strong performance against Florida Roots, one of the top teams in the division. Added to the intrigue was that Union could disrupt Roots trying to get back to the top. The U10 defense shined, and they shut down the Roots, winning 2-0.
UPSL
FC Birmingham
FCB closed out the Spring season on the road against Legends FC. They've had a tough Spring, and weren't in form early in the season. Their final six games saw them go 2-2-2. Saturday's game against Legends ended in a 0-0 draw. A bright spot for the season was Giancarlo Bustamante, who scored ten goals.
Other news and tidbits
Birmingham Legion WFC faced Southern Soccer Academy in the second game of a double-header. SSA has been a tough opponent this season, and the Three Sparks lose 1-3.
Fountain City FC (UPSL) played their final game of the Spring season on the road against Middle Georgia United. The score was tied at 2-2 at halftime, but Tristan Shytle scored two goals in the second half to give FCFC a 4-2 win, and an undefeated first season. They will be in a playoff next week to shoot for promotion to UPSL Premier. Shytle's 18 goals for the season tied him for second place nationally for the golden boot for UPSL1.

That's amazing that Dothan drew 4000 fans for the game played in front of the Commish! Hopefully that level of fanship will continue and be sustained....perhaps ultimately propelling Dothan up to League One!
