WEEK AHEAD PREVIEW
Week of Sat Aug 17 - Fri Aug 23. All times Central
Just one game this week for Lower Alabama clubs.
Huntsville City FC
Sat Aug 17 vs New York Red Bulls II 7:00
This game demonstrates one of the biggest advantages of MLS NextPro. Last week's game was the third meeting between HV and Chattanooga FC. This week's game against RB2 will be the only meeting this season between these two Eastern teams. That's a huge deal when you're talking about travel costs, and budgets. RB2 sit in the middle of the table, and they're incredibly inconsistent. They're just as likely to have a 1-1 draw as they are to blow out their opponent, or get blown out themselves. They've scored the second-most goals (44), and have also given up the most of any team (46). Additionally, 6 of their 21 games have seen red cards issued (half to RB2 players), and someone has been sent off in three of their last four games. What does it all mean? Huntsville will be trying to build some momentum for their new head coach after winning last week. This is most likely to be a physical game with a high number of goals scored. RB2 may not be ready to run a track meet in Alabama heat, so I think Huntsville has an edge in this one.

The women's USL Super League begins play this weekend. It's not Lower, or Alabama, but it's a big deal for the sport. I know there are players in there who grew up in Alabama, played at one of the universities in Alabama, and/or played for the Legion USLW team. But I couldn't begin to track them all down. If you have Peacock, tune in to a game or games and support this important development for the sport in the US.
The USMNT has hired Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach. The initial reactions seem to be very positive, as he's got tremendous experience as player and a coach. Hopefully he can get the national team on track headed into the 2026 World Cup. Excitement for the team and the tourney could provide a huge boost to the sport up and down the pyramid.
