Mid-week Results
Three wins, and a tough loss
The Legion post game is a great experience. The bulk of the fans and players were behind me. But the Head Coach and President of the club are in this pic, accessible to fans.
Birmingham Legion
Legion has been playing some great defense, but have been inconsistent scoring. San Antonio limped into town with several players on the injury list (including Juan Agudelo), and a couple of new faces. As far as that goes, Bham had two new keepers on the roster tonight due to injuries. Hibbert (on loan from Atlanta United 2) got the start in goal. What's the best way to help out a brand new 19 year-old GK? A great place to start is allowing zero shots on goal by San Antonio. Follow that up with three goals of your own. Legion dominated all aspects of the match, and got a big win 3-0. The crowd was solid for mid-week. Best estimate was 4500 or so.
USL2
Dothan United Dragons
The Dragons have entered must-win territory for keeping their playoff hopes alive. East Atlanta came to town riding lower in the table, but they've given a tough game to everyone they've played. Dothan had another great crowd on hand (eyeball guess is 3500-4000), but ATL came in looking to play spoiler. Dothan loses 0-2.
GCPL
Alabama FC South at AFC Mobile 7:00
AFC has played better at home than they have on the road. They would continue that trend against the Storm. ALFCS led just 2-1 at halftime, and needed to come out hard on the front foot for the second half. Seeding for the division might be at stake because first place Sowegans have scored a ton of goals this season (several were at AFC'S expense). The storm pushed hard until the very end, scoring the final goal in stoppage time. ALFCS wins 5-1. This result puts ALFCS at 16 points behind Sowegans’ 21 points, with a game in hand (and one more game against each other).
Other news and tidbits
Birmingham Legion WFC are a very talented team that are sitting near the bottom of a very tough division. The Three Sparks were the opening act at Protective Stadium before the Legion game against San Antonio. This strategy has more fans in the stands than a typical game. Greenville is a team that was ranked as the top team in USLW early in the season, before Legion W showed up and took three points from them. Confidence was high, and the ladies got the win at home, beating Greenville 1-0.
