Where did the "Three Sparks" team name come from? The USL League Two team names are particularly colorful! I just looked up the Marietta, GA-based SSA squad: their men's and women's teams are called respectively the Kings and Royals! And their team logo features a royal-looking lion!
The main Birmingham Legion club crest has a hammer and anvil, with three stars (sparks). At times, people have referred to the USLC team that way, but when they formed the USLW last year they took to calling them the Three Sparks. Before Legion was formed Bham had a team called the Hammers that played in NPSL and then USL2. That's some of the inspiration of the Legion logo (the Hammers folded, to make way for Legion, and their owners were part of Legion ownership). That's why there's some effort underway to adopt the Hammers name for the new USL2 team.
