ALFC South

League One Updater has stated that there are strong indications that an announcement will be coming soon that would place a USL League One club in Montgomery, AL. As far back as 2017 USL expansion officials were in Montgomery and had called it out as a target market. Nothing else has been said since, but it would make a ton of sense.
There is also an announcement scheduled for Thursday by ALFC South. A poster on Reddit has pointed out that the YMCA Montgomery web site has a statement buried in a page about registrations. ALFC South is operated within that YMCA umbrella, and plays at the facility owned and operated by the Y. The statement discovered says “Montgomery United FC will field a Men's team in USL League Two in summer of 2025”.
If nothing else, this would seem to indicate that ALFC South will be re-branded, and move to USL2 from the Gulf Coast Premier League. The name change would be a good move, as would a move into the league where they would face Legion 2 and the Dothan Dragons. I have some concerns related to the GCPL, as the key person in league operations has stepped away from his own club to focus on his children, after the tragic passing of his wife.
Among questions to be answered are if this would be a first step towards a USL1 Montgomery United, or a separate effort. Updater mentioned that a stadium deal is rumored to be part of the USL1 plan, although the YMCA facility meets the standards for a division 3 team, if necessary. Lastly, I wonder if they'll field a USLW team, which would be a natural fit within the club.
I'll toss a disclaimer down here. It feels like all if this is likely to be interconnected, but there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding it. It's exciting to be having the conversation. I'll post updates when available for whatever the announcement is on Thurs.
